“how do we talk about this”

A Show of Recent Paintings by Thya Merz
At Wilderbee Farm’s Mead Werks
May 2nd – July 27th 2025
Artist’s Reception, June 22nd, 3-5pm

On December 14th 2012, after a long, excruciating day as a Head of School that serves pre-school and elementary students in lower Manhattan, I left my office and rode the subway to my studio in Brooklyn.

Before I could go home, fall asleep, and rise the next day to be present for my faculty, my students, and their families, I needed to process what had just happened at Sandy Hook ES. Above is the small piece I created in that moment.

I Tried Calling, Thya Merz

Now, living 3,000 miles, and more than a decade away from that moment in time, I still turn to art making as a vehicle to understand, and enter into difficult conversations.

My show at Mead Werks is a display of my most recent attempts to not turn away from the almost incomprehensible “moments” we are experiencing at this juncture in our history.
